The Brown County Historical Society will be hosting The Women of Early Green Bay: Afternoon Tea on March 25th from 1:00 -3:00 p.m. This event is in celebration of Women’s History Month! Guests will enjoy a tea buffet with savory and sweet treats, all served with old-fashioned flair. Then, meet four historic women of Green Bay and listen to their fascinating stories about life in early Wisconsin!

Winter greetings to all Astor neighbors as the days are growing longer, and the holidays are behind us. As I narrowed down what I wanted to discuss in this winter letter, I went back to review what my predecessors had discussed historically and how many of those issues are still pressing and which are not so much. For example, in each of the last few winter letters, past presidents have asked for volunteers to help with projects, and the range of benefits associated with being a volunteer. There have also been calls for those with special skills to consider joining our board to help facilitate change, present new ideas, or perhaps explore and celebrate our past as a neighborhood. This remains a challenge and we are still looking for any neighbor who meets any of these categories and would like to become a board member.

Another issue from just last year which was detailed so well by former ANA President Molly Martzke, is the status of Green Bay and whether or not it will push for Certified Local Government status. Many of us attended a meeting last January where we watched a detailed history of just exactly what that would mean to all of us. As it was proposed, it would make Green Bay’s proposed CLG one of the strictest in the state. Be assured that someone will address this at our annual meeting in March as it is an idea that directly affects so many of us.

Finally, and once again, if any of you have projects you would like to see take place in our neighborhood, or you have concerns you would like to see addressed, please join us at one of our monthly meetings on the third Monday of the month at First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 6:00pm.

GBPD District C officers has another Coffee With A Cop scheduled for Friday, February 17th from 8am to 10:30am at The Attic Books and Coffee, 730 Bodart St. Stop by for a cup of coffee and have a chat with your neighborhood officers.

For the second year NeighborWorks Green Bay in collaboration with the Green Bay Neighborhood Leadership Council will be offering a “Green Bay Community Leadership Institute”. The event will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Southwest High School, 1331 Packerland Drive, Green Bay, WI 54304. The goal of the one-day training event is to strengthen the voices and leadership skills of community residents and volunteer leaders. The event is available to residents throughout the Green Bay area, and the cost is only $10. Registration information found on the NeighborWorks Green Bay website: http://nwgreenbay.org/. This is an inclusive event and an outstanding opportunity for current and prospective leaders and volunteers of our neighborhood associations, residents, area non-profit organizations and other local service groups, while also including interested individuals of all ages who wish to share their skills, ideas and energy towards building a better community. Sessions to be included the Green Bay Community Leadership Institute are: Getting the Most of Communication Opportunities, ,Networking and Meetings, Advocating for Your Community, Fundraising Overview, Special Events Planning, Personal and Community Asset Mapping, Art as a Community Building Tool, Volunteer Management/Recruiting and Engaging Volunteers, Best of Neighborhood Associations. The Astor Neighborhood Association supports this training opportunity. Please consider attending this event with others in your Community.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who attended this year’s event, to say “thank you” to Kevin and Lynn Heslin for their wonderful hospitality for a second year, and to express one more thank you to the local businesses which provided both food for the party, and baskets for the silent auction. Thank You All! Everyone seemed to be having a real nice time engaging in conversation with neighbors and meeting new friends in our neighborhood. There was a nice outlay of tasty treats too, which disappeared over the course of the evening.

Over the course of the evening, I spoke to numerous neighbors who expressed the willingness to attend or even host a summertime get together. A beer garden or a beer and wine garden were popular ideas, as well as the possibility of many of the foodies in the neighborhood bringing a dish to such a party. So many have lovely yards they would love to share with others. I’ll keep all informed about this option, and please feel free to contact me if you are interested in such an event. Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in the “If Homes Could Talk”, and to those of you who expressed interest in making their homes one of those on the tour. Please feel free to attend the annual meeting on March 20th to see a presentation on this historical adventure between the ANA and the Brown County Historical Society, and please bring your ideas too.
